Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week #maternalMHmatters

30th April 2018 sees the start of Perinatal Mental Health Awareness week organised @PMHPUK to raise awareness of #maternalMHmatters and the risks of mental illness during and after pregnancy.

It is exactly 8 years since the avoidable death of Joanne (Joe) Bingley when her daughter was just 10 weeks old. She was being treated at home for very severe postnatal depression without knowing what she really needed was the help of specialist perinatal mental health practitioners who could have saved her life.

It is wonderful to see that Mums (and Dads) across South and West Yorkshire now have access to the Community Perinatal Mental Health Service they need which will save lives.

But across 50% of the UK these specialist services are still not available!

By joining the debate @PMHPUK and campaigning to prioritise #maternalMHmatters you could help prevent the unnecessary suffering of so many Mums and avoid the horror of losing someone you love.

Background

An Independent Investigation into the death of Joanne (Joe) Bingley, carried out by the eminent expert Margaret Oates, identified 21 critical failures in the health care that Joanne received which resulted in her avoidable death, a fact confirmed by the Coroner’s inquest in October 2011 and subsequently accepted by the NHS in civil court.

A key criticism was the failure by the South and West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust to provide a specialist Perinatal Mental Health Team as described by best practice.

Following years of campaigning £2m was released for the launch in March 2017 of Perinatal Mental Health Service across South and West Yorkshire
