Recognising The SymptomsRecognise the Symptoms with this Simple Checklist

You may feel one or more of these symptoms – although its rare you would feel them all:

  • Feeling very low or despondent – nothing seems good and everything seems grey
  • Feeling tired or lethargic, even numb, having little interest in the outside world
  • A sense of not being able to cope, of feeling inadequate
  • Feeling guilty or bad about not coping or not loving the baby enough
  • Being unusually or extra irritable
  • Wanting to cry all the time, for no reason or at the slightest thing
  • Losing your appetite – or even feeling hungry but being unable to eat
  • Difficulty sleeping, unable to drop off, waking up, nightmares
  • Sleeping all the time
  • Being hostile towards your partner or other family members
  • Being hostile or uninterested in your baby
  • Losing interest in sex
  • Having panic attacks – rapid heartbeat, sweaty palms, feeling of sickness or faintness
  • Overwhelming anxiety about things that wouldn’t normally bother you
  • Difficulty in concentrating or making decisions
  • Physical symptoms such as stomach pains, headaches and blurred vision
  • Obsessive fears about the baby’s health and wellbeing – or yourself or other family members
  • Thoughts about death
  • Thoughts about harming yourself or the baby

For some people its hard to admit that they have PND, and even harder to ask for help.  However:  It is important to seek help as soon as you start to recognise that you have postnatal depression – the quicker you get help the sooner you will get better and start to enjoy parenting. You aren’t a failure, don’t measure yourself against anyone else – you and your baby are unique.
