Am I at Risk?

Some factors make some people more at risk of developing postnatal depression – having some or even all of these does not necessarily mean that you will develop PND. However, it will help you understand that it is NOT your fault and you should not feel guilty.

  • A family history of bipolar disorder (manic depression)
  • If you have had depression before
  • You have been subjected to abusive or poor parenting
  • Low self esteem
  • You lost your mother at a young age
  • You are socially isolated
  • If you have experienced depression during pregnancy
  • If you have undergone IVF treatment
  • A premature or traumatic birth
  • If you are an older mother
  • Substance abuse, drugs, alcohol, glue sniffing etc
  • You are a victim of domestic violence
  • You are a refugee or recent migrant – especially non-English speaking
